This chart shows where Australia’s electricity came from, one region at a time. Pick a state below it, and hover anywhere on the chart to see what each type of generator was doing at that moment. The dates it covers are written underneath it, so you always know how fresh the numbers are.

Show the numbers
Solar and grid-scale batteries are now on the chart too. They weren’t when I first wrote this: in the early data solar barely registered and batteries barely existed on the grid. Both are big enough now that leaving them out would have made the rest of the chart misleading.
What’s still missing
The solar you see here is utility-scale solar farms only - the ones large enough that AEMO meters and publishes their output directly. Rooftop solar on houses and businesses isn’t in this data at all, because nobody centrally meters it the way they meter a power station. It’s a genuinely large chunk of the country’s generation and it just isn’t here. Some other very small generators are also missing, but their combined output is much less than any of the fuels shown so it won’t make much difference to the total result.
Is the chart not loading for you?
The numbers come from a file I publish separately, and the chart goes and reads it when you open the page. If it can’t get to that file, it falls back to the last copy that shipped with the site rather than showing you nothing. Either way the caption under the chart tells you which one you’re looking at, so it won’t ever quietly pass off old numbers as today’s.
